Visiting San Diego

I love Southern California. It is one of my favorite places to visit - possibly because we lived there until I was in third grade and I spent every summer and vacation at my dad’s place near Escondido up through high school. So in many ways, it still feels like “home” to me, although I’ve gotten to experience my favorite places all over again and in a different way when we visit now with the kids. 

I'm often asked for trip advice for the San Diego area - beyond the major attractions. 

The San Diego area has a lot to offer, and there's plenty to do without to make it a destination in it's own right, rather than a simple side trip from Anaheim. Here’s a rundown with links to some of my favorite San Diego / SoCal places to go and things to do:

No matter what your political affiliation, the Ronald Regan Library in Simi Valley is a pretty neat stop - you can see both Air Force One and Marine One and the Berlin Wall Display is very good.

If there is a San Diego "don't miss" I would say it is Balboa Park http://www.balboapark.org/

Not just one, but several different museums and gardens, located near the Zoo. There’s also a great miniature railroad and carousel that kids will love.

Right where I grew up is the San Diego Wild Animal Park (now the San Diego Zoo Safai Park) where you can take a zip line or tour open enclosures http://www.sdzsafaripark.org/   

 While you're out there, stop at the San Pasqual Valley Museum and visit the the site of a battle featuring Kit Carson. Then visit the San Pasqual Valley Ranch for roping and riding lessons or take in a team penning or roping as a spectator  http://www.callspvr.com/index.html

Head on up the highway to the Ramona Rodeo http://ramonarodeo.net/

Go Dancing – at InCahoots http://www.incahoots.com/ If you want to learn to two-step, swing or line dance, they offer free lessons (don’t bring the kids though).

For a little excitement, go to the Del Mar Races to catch a live horserace http://www.dmtc.com/ (kids are allowed in some areas but no betting!)

Catch a ball game! Admission is usually fairly inexpensive for the "cheap seats" and the weather is almost always beautiful to see the Padres play http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=sd

Lego Land is just a short drive a bit north of San Diego in Oceanside and a lot of fun, especially for kids 3-12 http://california.legoland.com/ they also have a waterpark and Sea Life Aquarium – it isn’t Sea World but is worth checking out.

Point Loma Beach – great for hiking

Mission Beach – crowded but a fun beachy vibe

Pacific Beach near La Jolla

Children’s Beach in La Jolla is a great place to see Harbour Seals. 

The Pacific Ocean tends to be pretty cold, so if you're visiting in the winter, don't plan on swimming without a wetsuit. 

For the ultimate place to stay, there’s the Hotel Del:

SKIP any wine tasting in Temecula! If you want great wines, try Julian or better yet, Sonoma.
